On 21 November 2024, Woodlands Police Division hosted the second Migrant Worker Community Partnership Forum (MWCPF) 2024, in collaboration with the Dormitory Association of Singapore Limited (DASL). Held under the theme “Stronger Together, Forward We Go,” the event showcased continued efforts in strengthening the safety and well-being of the migrant worker community in Woodlands.
The MWCPF is part of the Community Safety and Security Programme by Woodlands Police Division, aimed at fostering closer ties between the Police and various migrant worker stakeholders such as dormitories and the Ministry of Manpower’s Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) Group. The active participation and strong partnership between the Police and stakeholders, since the inauguration of MWCPF in 2023, had resulted in a huge turnout of migrant workers during Facebook Live sessions conducted by the Police over festive events and celebrations at Migrant Worker Recreation Centres.
MWCPF 2024 was graced by Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Senior Minister of State (SMS) for the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Manpower, and Member of Parliament for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. More than 100 guests attended the forum, including dormitory operators, representatives from DASL, the Migrant Workers’ Centre, and various government agencies, such as the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), National Environment Agency (NEA) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
A highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates of appreciation to Migrant Worker Guardians by SMS Zaqy Mohamad. This recognition acknowledged their efforts in supporting the Police by sharing crime prevention and anti-scam messages in their native languages such as Bengali and Burmese during dormitory engagements. A total of 60 volunteers have been actively participating in such engagements across 12 purpose-built dormitories in Woodlands Police Division, amplifying the outreach and effectiveness of crime prevention initiatives, which are usually conducted in English by Community Policing Officers.
The event concluded with the recitation of the Pledge of Commitment by the Migrant Worker Guardians, reaffirming their ongoing dedication to safeguard the safety and security of the migrant worker community. The Pledge of Commitment was first launched at the MWCPF 2023, as a collaboration between Woodlands Police Division and the DASL.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Ang Eng Seng, Commander of Woodlands Police Division, expressed his gratitude to all participants. He remarked, “This forum exemplifies the SPF’s partnership with the private sector to reduce crime in the dormitories and minimise victimisation. Migrant workers are integral to Singapore’s workforce, and they play a key role to bring about our economic success and prosperity. I thank all our dormitory and agency partners, and our Migrant Worker Guardians, for their tireless efforts in working closely with the Police. Together, we have protected our migrant workers and kept them safe from crime.”
The MWCPF 2024 underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring the safety and security of the migrant worker community, highlighting the ongoing commitment of all stakeholders involved.
