The Police have arrested a 30-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in a series of rental scams.
Between 21 October and 20 November 2024, the Police received reports from several victims who were purportedly cheated after responding to online posts advertising a residential room for rent. The victims would pay a deposit to the woman, who promised to secure the victims a rental space at her own registered address. After the victims paid the deposit, the woman was purportedly unable to fulfil the rental agreements.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Central Police Division and Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on 3 December 2024. Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman is believed to be involved in at least six similar cases of rental scams with losses amounting to more than $6,000.
The woman will be charged in court on 4 December 2024 with the offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
The Police takes a serious view of cheating offences, and offenders will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
