Man Arrested For Assisting With Unlicensed Moneylending Business

The Police have arrested a 52-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of assisting with unlicensed moneylending business.

On 13 February 2025 at about 4.30pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Ang Mo Kio Street 31, where the house occupant received harassing messages and videos of her residential unit from the loanshark. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had assisted the loansharks to take videos of the residential unit, which was then used by them to harass the debtor.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras and CCTVs, officers from Ang Mo Kio Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on the same day. The man is also allegedly involved in other similar cases of assisting with unlicensed moneylending business.

The man will be charged in court on 15 February 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of assisting with unlicensed moneylending business carries a fine between $30,000 and $300,000, with imprisonment of up to four years, and caning of up to six strokes. For second and subsequent offenders, the offence of assisting with unlicensed moneylending business carries a fine between $30,000 and $300,000, with imprisonment of up to seven years, and caning of up to 12 strokes.

The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who assist with unlicensed moneylending business, deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone involved in loansharking activities.
