The Police will be charging an 85-year-old man on 26 February 2025 for his alleged involvement in publishing an online post with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of Muslims.

On 29 and 30 June 2021, the Police received reports in relation to online posts on the man’s Facebook account which contained offensive remarks about Islam. Investigations found that on 21 April 2021, the man had re-posted screenshots of his Facebook posts containing offensive remarks about Islam from five years earlier.

The man left Singapore in January 2022 when Police investigations were ongoing and only returned to Singapore in October 2024.

The man will be charged with one count of causing a matter to be seen, with deliberate intent to wound the racial feelings of any person under section 298 of the Penal Code, in relation to the Facebook post made on 21 April 2021. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, a fine, or both.

The Police take a serious view of acts that can damage racial and religious harmony in Singapore. Any person who makes remarks or acts in a manner which can cause ill-will and hostility between the different races or religious groups in Singapore will be dealt with firmly.
