The Police have arrested two men, aged 21 and 56, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.

In the first case on 24 February 2025 at about 8am, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Serangoon North Avenue 4, where the main door was splashed with red paint. A debtor’s note was also left behind outside the unit and subsequently seized as case exhibit.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 24 February 2025. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 21-year-old man is believed to be involved in several similar cases of loanshark harassment islandwide.

In the second case on 24 February 2025 at about 5.45pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Punggol Central, where the main gate was secured with a bicycle lock. 

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 25 February 2025. A bicycle lock was seized as case exhibit. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 56-year-old man is believed to be involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassment islandwide. 

Both men will be charged in court on 26 February 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes. 

The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law. 

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone involved in loansharking activities.
