Enhanced Measures to Curb Speeding and Improve Road Safety

We thank Mr Cai Tian Shou for his letter, “从源头应对超速问题“, of 7 March 2025.

The Traffic Police (TP) shares his concerns about the rise in speed-related fatal accidents.

TP’s enforcement strategy combines open and covert patrols, with a network of traffic cameras. The cameras are painted in bright colours to serve as visible deterrents, and their locations are published on the Police's website. TP’s covert enforcement operations, on the other hand, aim to shape motorist behaviour to always drive safely, and not only when they spot enforcement officers or cameras.

TP has intensified patrols, and activated the speeding enforcement function in red light cameras. Consequently, more speeding violations have been detected, from 116,440 cases in 2023 to 191,931 cases in 2024.

In addition, as recently announced, the composition sums and demerit points for speeding offences will be increased from 1 January 2026, to further deter speeding.

Mr Cai suggested the use of countdown timers. Results from a trial by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) did not show an improvement to safety. On the contrary,  motorists sped up to beat the timer.

To improve road safety, TP also works with LTA to improve the safety of road infrastructure through appropriate design and safety features, such as in School Zones, Silver Zones, and Friendly Streets.

TP actively engages the community through initiatives such as the Road Safety Carnival for Families, Reward the Sensible Motorists campaign, and Singapore Ride Safe campaign. TP also reaches out to the public with road safety messages through various media platforms.

All these initiatives are part of TP’s multi-pronged approach to improving road safety.

That said, it is also a shared responsibility.  All of us must play our part, if we want to be safe on the roads, and our loved ones too.
