The Police would like to alert members of the public to a scam involving scammers, who claim to represent religious figures or be affiliated with religious figures, offering to provide winning lottery numbers. Since January 2023, at least 55 victims have fallen prey, with losses amounting to at least $507,000.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), New Zealand Defence Support Unit (NZDSU) (South East Asia) and Installations Auxiliary Police Force (IAPF) conducted a counter-terrorism exercise in the morning of 24 February 2023 at Sembawang Naval Installation (SNI). This exercise is part of the continuous efforts by the Home Team and SAF to test and validate Singapore’s multi-agency response plan in the event of terrorist attacks.

The Police would like to remind members of the public about a persistent trend observed in relation to the fake friend scam variant, which involves scammers contacting victims through text messages (e.g. via WhatsApp) or phone/WhatsApp calls, pretending to be someone they know, and thereafter asking for financial assistance. Since January 2023, at least 945 victims have fallen prey, with total losses amounting to at least $3.2 million.

Officers from the Commercial Affairs Department and the seven Police Land Divisions conducted a two-week operation between 25 February 2023 and 9 March 2023. A total of 263 men and 94 women, aged between 16 and 75, are assisting in investigations for their suspected involvement in scams as scammers or money mules. The suspects are believed to be involved in more than 1,163 cases of scams, comprising mainly fake friend call scams, investment scams, e-commerce scams, job scams and Government Officials impersonation scams, where victims reportedly lost over $4 million.
