The Police have arrested a total of 21 individuals, aged between 18 and 46, for their suspected involvement in perpetrating various scams such as job scams, e-commerce scams, loan scams, and fake gambling platform scams. Eighteen men and three women, will be charged in Court on 14 October 2022 for their suspected involvement in various offences connected to money mule activities, such as cheating, money laundering, facilitating unauthorised access to computer material and carrying on an unlicensed business of providing payment service.

The Police would like to alert members of the public on the emergence of a new variant of phishing scams involving unpaid tolls. Since 13 October 2022, the Police have received at least 20 reports, with losses amounting to at least $22,000.

The Police have observed an emergence of malware scams involving the sale of second-hand goods on fraudulent advertisements posted on Facebook. In September 2023, at least 21 victims have fallen prey, with total losses amounting to at least $210,000. Members of the public are advised to be wary of fraudulent advertisements, especially when purchasing or selling items/services on Facebook.

Officers from the Commercial Affairs Department and the seven Police Land Divisions conducted a two-week operation between 30 September and 13 October 2022. A total of 227 men and 112 women, aged between 15 and 73, are assisting in investigations for their suspected involvement in scams as scammers or money mules. The suspects are believed to be involved in more than 1,002 cases of scams, comprising mainly job scams, loan scams, internet love scams, phishing scams and Government and China Officials impersonation scams, where victims reportedly lost over $14.9 million.

On 19 July 2022, a 35-year-old former bank officer, Phua Wee Hao (“Phua”), was convicted of one count of an offence under Section 44(1)(a) of the Corruption Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act, Chapter 65A (“CDSA”) and two counts of abetting others to fail to exercise reasonable diligence in the discharge of their duties as a director under Section 157(1) of the Companies Act, Chapter 50 ("Companies Act"), read with Section 109 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 (“Penal Code”). On 20 October 2022, he was sentenced to eight months and one week imprisonment and a fine of $8,000.
