The Police had received at least 11 reports on a new type of e-commerce scams involving the sale of face masks where the victims of these scams were asked to make payment in advance via bank transfers and then directed to collect face masks from various clinics. The victims only realised that they were scammed after they went to the clinics and were informed that there were no such arrangements. Investigations are ongoing.

The Police arrested a woman and three men on 20 February 2020, for suspected involvement in separate e-commerce scams involving the sale of face masks and other items. The scams exploited the use of e-commerce platforms and online channels such as Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, Carousell, WhatsApp and Telegram.

The Police would like to alert the public on scams involving payment for sexual services, with credit-for-sex scams being the predominant variant of such scams. In 2019, the Police received at least 1065 reports of credit-for-sex scams, with total losses amounting to at least $2.8 million. The largest sum cheated in a single case was $80,000.

Lui Wai Leong, a 45-year-old Singaporean, was convicted for attempting to cheat the Trustees of the Cultural Matching Fund (“CMF”) into disbursing grants to the Chinese Cultural Association (“CCA”), a registered arts and heritage charity. The CMF, a fund set up by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, provides dollar-for-dollar matching grants for private cash donations received by registered charities in the arts and heritage sector.
