The Traffic Police (TP) and Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) organised the closing ceremony of the 40th Shell Traffic Games on Tuesday, 21 December 2021 at the Road Safety Community Park. The event was supported by the Shell Companies in Singapore. The Guest-of-Honour was Ms Yeo Wan Ling, Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris – Punggol GRC.

The Shell Traffic Games is an annual inter-school event where primary school children learn road safety rules in the form of a fun and interactive race either as a pedestrian, cyclist, or motorist in a go-kart. Over the years, the Games have evolved with the adoption of technology to promote interactivity during road safety training. In 2017, TP introduced the Shell Traffic Games mobile application to replace hardcopy route cards of the Road Safety Community Park. It was a significant step towards digitalisation, as students who attended road safety training at the park could use their mobile phones to help them navigate their way around the park. Virtual Reality (VR) goggles were also adopted for road safety training in 2018. The VR goggles allowed students to learn about traffic rules through visual simulations of a traffic environment.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions this year, the Traffic Police, the Singapore Road Safety Council, and the Shell Companies in Singapore, have collaborated with the Ministry of Education to organise a video competition.

The video competition was opened to all primary school children, and the competition encouraged children to think about what road safety meant to them. The videos were judged on creativity, originality, content, and visuals. Results of the competition (Annex A) will be posted on the Use Your RoadSense Facebook page on 21 December 2021.

TP and SRSC have also produced a special commemorative medallion to commemorate the Shell Traffic Games (sample in Annex B). The medallion will be presented to our partners who have made this initiative a resounding success for the past 40 years.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. It is important to educate our young road users to instil good road safety habits early.
