Three Individuals Presented With Public Spiritedness Award And Two Security Officers Presented With Letters Of Appreciation

On 25 June 2024, Ang Mo Kio Police Division presented the Public Spiritedness Award to three members of the public and letters of appreciation to two security officers for assisting the Police in two separate cases.

In the first case, on 14 May 2024, Mr Jason Hong (“Mr Hong”) spotted a man recording an upskirt video of a female victim on an ascending escalator. Mr Hong immediately confronted the man and alerted the female victim, who called for the Police. He then brought the man to the guardhouse and sought assistance from the security officers, Mr Loke Wei Xiang and Madam Magaletchumy. Mr Hong’s courageous act led to the prompt arrest of the man and prevented further victims from falling prey. The man was subsequently arrested for voyeurism.

The man will be charged in court on 27 June 2024. The offence of voyeurism, punishable under Section 377BB(5)(b) of the Penal Code 1871 carries an imprisonment term which may extend to two years, a fine, caning or any combination of such punishments.

In the second case, on 17 May 2024, Mr Tan Ming Seng (“Mr Tan”) was walking along Sengkang Riverside Park when he spotted a crying woman sitting at the edge of the riverbank. Mr Tan approached her and tried to calm her down. The woman ignored Mr Tan and walked into the river. Upon seeing this, Mr Tan quickly went into the water to pull her back, damaging his handphone in the process. Mr Ong Poh Eng (“Mr Ong”), who was passing by, witnessed the incident and quickly called the Police for assistance while Mr Tan stayed with the woman. Mr Tan and Mr Ong’s actions prevented the loss of a life.

The woman was subsequently apprehended under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act 2008.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Xie Xingmao, Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, commended the recipients for their courage in stepping forward to stop the commission of an offence and save lives. He said, “Their selfless intervention has helped to make our community a safer and more secure place. We thank them for their community mindedness and hope their stories will inspire others to step forward when they come across a person in need or when they spot a crime.”
