The Police have arrested a 43-year-old man for injuring a Police officer, driving dangerously, and driving without a driving licence on 24 July 2024. He will be charged in court on 26 July 2024.
On 24 July 2024 at 1.40pm, Traffic Police officers conducted an operation along Java Road, and directed a van to stop for checks. The 43-year-old male driver did not stop and sped off. He did it in a dangerous manner, before stopping his van at the junction of Sims Way and Geylang Road and fleeing on foot. Officers gave chase and managed to stop him along Lorong 9 Geylang. While the officers were trying to detain the man, he bit one of the officers on his left forearm. Despite his injury, the officer managed to subdue and arrest the man together with another officer.
The 35-year-old officer who was bitten suffered a laceration on his left forearm. He was conveyed to hospital and subsequently discharged with three days of medical leave.
The man will be charged for the following offences:
- One count of voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code 1871 punishable with an imprisonment for a term of up to seven years, and a fine or caning;
- One count of dangerous driving under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 punishable with an imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months, or a fine of up to $5,000 or both;
- One count of driving without a valid driving licence under Section 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 punishable with an imprisonment for a term of up to three years, or a fine of up to $10,000, or both;
Commander of Traffic Police, Senior Assistant Commissioner Daniel Tan said, “The motorist showed a blatant disregard for the law by attacking and injuring the police officers who were performing their duties. He also endangered the safety of all other road users by driving dangerously and without a valid driving licence. He will bear the full brunt of his actions and will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.”
The Police have zero tolerance for such brazen acts of violence against police officers and will not hesitate to take firm action. The Traffic Police also takes a serious view of motorists who drive in a manner that endangers their safety and that of other road users. Motorists who choose to flout traffic laws will be firmly dealt with.
