The Police have arrested three persons, aged between 32 to 69, for their suspected involvement in three separate cases of loanshark harassment.

In the first case, on 22 August 2024, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Woodlands Drive 62, where the keyhole of the main gate was filled with liquid substance believed to be glue.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of a 39-year-old man and subsequently arrested him on 18 September 2024.

In the second case, on 10 September 2024, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Woodlands Street 32, where a debtor’s note was pasted on the main gate of the unit.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Woodlands and Clementi Police Division established the identity of a 32-year-old man and arrested him on 18 September 2024. Preliminary investigations revealed that he is allegedly involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassment islandwide.

In the third case, on 18 September 2024, the Police were alerted to a case ofloanshark harassment at a residential unit along Yishun Ave 6. A 69-year-old man was arrested at the scene while he was attempting to pass a debtor’s note to one of the house occupants. Two debtor’s notes were seized as case exhibit.

The three men will be charged in court on 19 September 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.

The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
