The Police have arrested three youths, aged between 16 and 17, for their suspected involvement in a case of theft of motor vehicles.
On 7 December 2024 at about 3.20pm, the Police were alerted to a case of theft of motor vehicles. The victim informed that two of his rental cars were purportedly stolen at a multi-storey carpark located at Upper Serangoon Road.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of the three youths and arrested them on 10 December 2024. The two stolen cars were subsequently recovered.
Two of the youths will be charged in court on 11 December 2024 with the following offences:
- Theft of motor vehicle under Section 379A of the Penal Code 1871;
- Driving whilst under 18 years of age under Section 62(1)(b) read with Section 62(4) read with Section 131(2)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961; and
- Using vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) punishable under Section 3(2) punishable under Section 3(3) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960.
The remaining youth will be charged in court on 11 December 2024 with the following offences:
- Dishonestly retaining stolen property under Section 411(2) of the Penal Code 1871;
- Driving whilst under 18 years of age under Section 62(1)(b) read with Section 62(4) read with Section 131(2)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961; and
- Using vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) punishable under Section 3(2) punishable under Section 3(3) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1960.
The offence of theft of a motor vehicle carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years and a fine. The offence of dishonestly retaining stolen property carries an imprisonment term of up to five years, and if the stolen property is a motor vehicle or any component part of a motor vehicle, a fine and possible disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period from the date of his release from imprisonment. The offence of underage driving carries a an imprisonment term of up to three months, a fine of up to $1,000, or both for first time offenders. The offence of driving without a valid insurance coverage in respect of third-party risks carries an imprisonment term of up to three months, a fine of up to $1,000, or both, and also disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period of 12 months from the date of conviction.
The Police would like to advise all motor vehicle owners to adopt the following crime prevention measures:
- Park in well-lit areas,
- Install an anti-theft alarm system and ensure it is well-maintained,
- Lock all vehicle doors and wind up all windows when leaving the vehicle, even if it is for a short while, and
- Remove the ignition key and lock the vehicle, whenever it is left unattended.
