The Police have arrested a 43-year-old female foreign traveller for her suspected involvement in a case of shop theft in the transit area of Changi Airport.
On 17 October 2024, the Police were alerted to a case of theft at Changi Airport, where a pair of sunglasses valued at about S$270 was discovered missing from a retail outlet located in the transit area.
The item was discovered missing after a stock take was conducted on 14 October 2024. With the aid of CCTV footage, officers from the Airport Police Division established the identity of the woman. However, the woman had left Singapore on a flight after she had purportedly committed the crime. Preliminary investigations revealed that she allegedly entered the store and removed the price tag of a pair of sunglasses she picked up from a display shelf and replaced the stolen item with her own sunglasses before leaving the store without paying.
The woman was subsequently arrested on 14 December 2024 after she returned to Singapore.
The woman will be charged in court on 18 December 2024 for the offence of theft in dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years and a fine.
The Police take a serious view of shop theft cases and offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. The Police will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter cases of shop theft.
