MAN INVESTIGATED FOR FLYING UNMANNED AIRCRAFT IN SPECIAL EVENT AREA

            Police have investigated a 55-year-old man for flying an unmanned Aircraft in the vicinity of National Stadium which has been gazetted as a Special Event Area.

 

2          On 16 June 2015 at about 8.50pm, Police responded to a case of suspicious sightings at Kallang Riverside Park. Upon Police’s arrival, the man was seen operating an unmanned aircraft without a permit in a Special Event Area. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had flown an unmanned aircraft to take photographs of the fireworks of the 28th South East Asian Games Closing Ceremony at the National Stadium.

 

3          Police have completed investigations into the case and in consultation with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the man was administered with a stern warning on 18 June 2015. It is an offence under section 26(2A)(b)(i) of the Public Order Act, Chapter 257A to cause a drone to enter the Special Event Area. Any person who commits the offence shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $20,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or to both.

 

4          Police take a serious view of activities which threaten the security or disrupt the conduct of a Special Event or any activity associated with the Special Event. Flying an unmanned aircraft without the appropriate permit may pose a threat to public safety and security especially in areas where there are large crowds. Flying an unmanned aircraft near a fireworks area is especially dangerous and can cause severe harm to the members of public who are watching the fireworks. Members of the public are advised to refer to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) website* for more details on the permit applications regarding the operation of unmanned aircraft in Singapore.
