Police have arrested a 27-year-old Malaysian man for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment, with the assistance of two public-spirited individuals.

On 27 June 2015 at about 1.56 p.m., Police received a call from a member of the public informing that he and his neighbour had detained a man at Block 166 Bishan St 13 for writing on the wall outside their units.

Upon their arrival, Police officers arrested the man who was wearing a business suit. A permanent black-ink marker and a mobile phone in his possession were seized as case exhibits.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect may have committed loanshark harassment at more than 70 locations island-wide by writing loanshark-related graffiti on the walls of HDB residential units in the Bishan, Yishun and Woodlands areas.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 29 June 2015 for loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010). First-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to five years and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.
