Traffic Police have arrested two errant drivers believed to be involved in separate hit-and-run accidents – a 29-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a hit-and-run accident which occurred on Friday, 31 July 2015 along Jurong Town Hall Road, and a 30-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a hit-and-run accident which occurred on Tuesday, 11 August 2015 along Simei Avenue.

On Friday, 31 July 2015 at about 4.35 pm, an accident involving two cars, a van and a motorcycle occurred along Jurong Town Hall Road. A white Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) had collided with a motorcyclist, causing him to be flung onto the road. The MPV then collided onto the rear of another car, causing it to jerk forward, hitting the rear of a van. After the collision, the unknown MPV driver who caused the accident fled the scene on foot. As a result of the accident, the motorcyclist sustained injuries and was conveyed to the hospital for treatment. It was established subsequently that the MPV that caused the accident was affixed with a false number plate.

Following the accident, Traffic Police worked round the clock and managed to establish the identity of the suspect. In a joint operation with the Central Narcotics Bureau, the 29 year-old man believed to be the involved driver, was arrested for both traffic and drug offences on Tuesday, 11 August 2015 in the vicinity of Hougang Street 21. He is currently assisting Traffic Police with investigations into the hit-and-run accident on Friday, 31 July 2015.

The second case happened on Tuesday, 11 August 2015 at about 9.15 am. The accident involved six cars and two taxis along Simei Avenue. The accident occurred when the driver of a silver Saloon car failed to exercise proper control of his vehicle, causing an accident involving seven other vehicles. After the collision, the driver fled the scene on foot. As a result of the accident, one passenger sustained injuries and was conveyed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Through intensive investigations, Traffic Police swiftly established the identity of the 30-year-old driver and arrested him in the vicinity of National University Hospital. Investigations are ongoing against him for offences under Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276. Traffic Police will also suspend the driver's licence.

Traffic Police would like to remind motorists who are involved in accidents where any party is injured, to stop and render necessary assistance such as calling for an ambulance to attend to the injured party. If the vehicle owner is not present at the scene, the motorist should take reasonable steps to inform the owner of the accident, such as leaving a note on the windscreen of the damaged vehicle. Unless the motorist is able to establish contact with the vehicle owner, the motorist should lodge a police report as soon as it is practical to do so and within 24 hours. Failure to do so is an offence under Section 84 of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276. If convicted, the offender is liable to a fine not exceeding $3,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months and in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.
