Police have arrested four men aged between 23 and 32 for their suspected involvement in several cases of theft from person committed at shopping centres island wide.

Between 6 and 7 October 2015, Police received several reports of unattended bags left at café and restaurants being stolen. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTVs, officers from Orchard Neighbourhood Centre established the identities of the suspects and arrested them on 9 October 2015 along Jalan Besar. Stolen items which amounted to about $19,000 were also recovered.

All 4 suspects will be charged in the State Courts on 10 October 2015 for the offence of Theft with common intention under Section 379 read with 34 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 3 years or with fine, or with both.

Police would like to remind the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  1. Be wary of suspicious persons following you;
  2. Avoid exposing cash, valuables, or jewellery in public areas as this might draw unnecessary attention;
  3. Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket. Ensure that your bag is properly secured at all times. Cross-sling it in front or clasp it firmly while shopping or walking;
  4. Never leave your valuables unattended. Unattended valuables pose easy targets to would-be culprits;
  5. Keep a close watch on your belongings at all times and do not leave them unattended;
  6. Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion, bumping into you or accidentally spilling something onto you; check your valuables immediately if this happens.
