Police have arrested a 24-year-old woman for loanshark harassment.
On 8 November 2015, Police received a report that a unit at Yishun Street 11 had been locked with bicycle chain with a debtor’s note affixed on the door. Officers from Ang Mo Kio Division conducted extensive ground enquiries upon receiving the report and established the identity of the suspect before arresting her in Hougang Ave 9 on 1 December 2015. Preliminary investigations revealed that she is believed to have committed similar loanshark harassment cases in Yishun, Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Jurong East, Jurong West, Boon Lay, Sengkang, Tampines and Whampoa.
Loanshark paraphernalia such as bicycle locks and notebooks containing debtor addresses were found on her and seized as case exhibits.
The woman will be charged in Court on 2 December 2015 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
