Man Arrested For Suspected Involvement In Loansharking Activities

The Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 8 December 2015 at 1130 am, through follow-up investigations, officers from Central Division arrested the 31-year-old male suspect in the vicinity of Telok Blangah Rise. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have committed loanshark harassments in the housing estate of Telok Blangah Rise, by splashing paint on the doors of debtors and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls of HDB blocks.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 10 December 2015 for loanshark harassment. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.
