SECURITY AND TRAFFIC ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE MARINA BAY SINGAPORE COUNTDOWN 2016

Marina Bay Singapore Countdown (MBSC) 2016 will be held on 31 December 2015. This event is jointly organised by Esplanade and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the development agency for Marina Bay.

Large crowds and heavy traffic are expected around Marina Bay during the MBSC 2016 on New Year’s Eve. To ensure safety and security of the public, Police officers, Auxiliary Police officers and security officers will be deployed for security as well as crowd and traffic control.

Members of public are advised to take note of the safety, security and traffic arrangements that will be put in place to ensure a safe and pleasant experience for all.

Safety and Security Arrangements

Bags and personal items may be subjected to security checks. Members of the public are advised to cooperate with the Police officers and Auxiliary Police officers on duty. If you come across any suspicious items or persons, immediately notify the nearest Police officers or Auxiliary Police officers.

Do also remain vigilant against crimes amidst the festivities. Members of public are encouraged to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Look after your belongings and valuables at all times;
  • Beware of pickpockets and be cautious of strangers when approached;
  • Stay close to your friends or move around in groups; and
  • Avoid contact with unruly crowds.

Women are advised to be vigilant against opportunists who may commit molest in crowded areas. There have been previous incidents where individuals are known to spray foam onto victims and molest them.
To prevent overcrowding, Police officers and Auxiliary Police officers will be regulating the number of people entering The Promontory, One Fullerton / Merlion Park, Esplanade Park, Esplanade Waterfront Promenade, Marina Bay Sands Promenade and other areas within the vicinity of Marina Bay. In the event of overcrowding, MRT trains may bypass the affected stations to alleviate congestion.
The footways along the Esplanade Bridge and Bayfront Ave along Helix Bridge are to be used for transit only; pedestrians will not be allowed to congregate on these footways. The footway along Benjamin Sheares Bridge will be closed to pedestrians from 6.00pm on 31 December 2015 to 1.00am on 1 January 2016.

Members of the public are advised to exercise tolerance, patience and to abide by the instructions of Police officers and Auxiliary Police officers at all times, especially during dispersal. Crowd control barricades and directional signs will be put up to facilitate the safe and orderly dispersal.

The public is also reminded to be considerate to others when celebrating the year-end festivities in public areas and to avoid doing anything that may cause annoyance or compromise the safety of others. The Police would not hesitate to take action against any persons who commit crime or to cause nuisance to the general public under the guise of festivities.

Members of the public may approach Police officers or dial ‘999’, if they require any urgent assistance. They may also make a report at the nearest Police station for assistance.
