The Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) organized the Delta League Grand Finals on 27 December 2015 (Sunday) at 6pm, at Jalan Besar Stadium. Mr Amrin Amin, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Home Affairs, was the Guest-of-Honour for the event.
Now into its 10th edition, the League is an island-wide programme consisting of 2,000 players from 96 teams competing in two different age groups; Under 16 and Under 18. Close to 300 matches have been played during the current school holidays, making it the largest football competition for youths in Singapore. Through the twice-yearly football tournament and customised programmes such as mentoring and community-involvement, the league promotes diligence, teamwork and discipline. To date, Delta League has benefited over 11,500 youths from all backgrounds.
Delta League Special Advisor
The NCPC appointed Mr Melvin Yong, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, as a Special Advisor to Delta League. Mr Yong launched the Delta League when he was Commander of Clementi Division in the Singapore Police Force. He will provide expertise and advice to help achieve the objectives of Delta League.
Importance of Crime Prevention
Mr Tan Kian Hoon, Chairman of NCPC, said: “The Delta League has come a long way since it was first started in 2010, and we’ve grown into what I understand is the largest football league in Singapore today. We’re grateful for the opportunity to reach out to the youths during the school holidays, and share with them more about crime prevention. We are also very thankful to the youths for their enthusiasm and energy in helping us spread crime prevention messages to the public.”
The next edition of Delta League will run during the June 2016 school holidays.
