The Singapore Police Force (SPF) held the Police Day Parade 2016 on Friday, 3 June 2016 at the Home Team Academy at 501, Old Choa Chu Kang Rd, Singapore 698928. Led by Parade Commander, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Gwee Aik Chiong, a total of 655 participants from the various police divisions; specialist units; Volunteer Special Constabulary; as well as cadets from the National Police Cadet Corps were involved in the parade segment.

Award Presentation

Two prestigious awards, namely the Best Land Division Award and Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit Award were presented during the parade by Mr. Desmond Lee, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of National Development, who graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.

Best Land Division Competition

The Best Land Division Competition was first introduced in 1996 to honour the Police Land Divisions for outstanding performance. This competition seeks to encourage a culture of healthy competition, greater divisional esprit-de-corps and a heightened sense of mission-mindedness.

The performance of the six land divisions is assessed based on the overall scores collated from a common scorecard, which reflects excellence in a set of performance indicators categorised into the following three areas:

  1. Mission effectiveness

  2. Efficiency

  3. Values and readiness

Bedok Division won the Best Land Division award this year. The division covers the eastern part of Singapore stretching from Geylang to Pasir Ris and Changi. It also serves a resident population of about 1 million. Commander of Bedok Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Alvin Moh莫泽珑said: “We are very grateful and humbled by this award, which was made possible with the strong support from the community, including our volunteers and National Servicemen. We dedicate this award to our families for their unwavering support as we go about our job to prevent, deter, and detect crime.”

Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit Competition

The Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit Competition aims to accord formal recognition to the Police National Service (PNS) Land Divisions for their outstanding management of PNSmen and to motivate them to strive for continuous National Service (NS) excellence.

Clementi Division won the Best National Service Operationally Ready Unit award this year. The Division fosters strong camaraderie amongst the PNSmen by having them train together before deployment and frequently holds team-bonding activities. Such strong bonds further motivates the NSmen to serve and contribute to the safety and security of their friends and loved ones.  NS Commander, Clementi Division, Superintendent of Police (NS) Lim Kok Hwa 林国华said, “Being united in purpose has definitely helped us to win the award this year. Our NSmen rose to the occasion when their contributions are required by the nation, and they served with pride in a year of challenging operational requirements.”

Commissioning of the Emergency Response Teams

The Guest-of-Honour also commissioned the Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) by presenting the ERTs officers with their skill badges. The 20 officers commissioned at the parade are part of the inaugural group of officers who completed their training.

The ERTs are specially trained in counter-assault skills and equipped with semi-automatic weapons to complement the Ground Response Force in responding to terrorist attacks. The ERTs form an additional level of tactical force to SPF’s initial response to any terrorist attacks.
