The Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

 

On 18 October 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Blk 344 Clementi Avenue 5 was splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti was also found scrawled on the unit’s wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of footages from Police Cameras (PolCams), officers from Clementi Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Blk 149 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh on 20 October 2016. 

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of loanshark harassment in Jurong East, Clementi, Bukit Batok, Yishun, Bedok, Hougang, Teck Whye, Seng Kang, Simei, and Chai Chee.

 

The man will be charged in Court on 22 October 2016 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
