Jurong Division hosted the Juliet Dormitories Cricket League 2016 at the Singapore Contractors Association Limited (SCAL) Recreation Centre on 23 October 2016. In its second year, the event serves as a platform for Police and community partners to engage foreign workers through cricket - a sport the community is familiar with.

Minister of State, Ministry of Manpower & Mayor, North East District, Mr Teo Ser Luck graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.

Jurong Division

Jurong Division has the largest foreign worker population of about 170,798 amongst the six land divisions. There are 28 purpose-built dormitories, 603 factory-converted dormitories and 64 temporary quarters for foreign workers within the precinct under the jurisdiction of Jurong Division.

Juliet Dormitories Cricket League

Juliet Dormitories Cricket League has been introduced as part of Jurong Division’s ongoing efforts to reach out to the foreign worker community to raise awareness on crime prevention and keep them informed on laws in Singapore.

The event is opened to all foreign workers residing within the jurisdiction of Jurong Division. A total of 9 teams from 9 dormitories will be participating in the league this year.

At the event, a roadshow comprising booths from Singapore Police Force (SPF), Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC), Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC), National Environment Agency (NEA), Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) and National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) will also be held. The roadshow provides a good opportunity for the agencies to spread important messages and deepen our outreach to the foreign worker community.

Jurong Division will also be training the participants of the league and appoint them as Foreign Worker Ambassadors (FWAs). The FWAs will help to spread important information such as crime prevention tips disseminated at similar outreach events to their peers at the dormitories.

The team from SCAL (Soon Lee) Dormitory emerged as the winner of the Juliet Dormitories Cricket League 2016.

Mr Teo Ser Luck said, “Initiatives such as this cricket league not only cater to the recreational needs of our foreign workers but also provide a good platform for them to better understand our local laws and norms through the various booths at the roadshow. I welcome more of such initiatives.”
