The Police, through the assistance of an alert sales assistant, have arrested a 19-year old man and a 20-year-old woman who are believed to have carried out fraudulent retail purchases using counterfeit credit cards at retail outlet along Orchard Turn.
On 21 November 2016, the Police received a report of a couple detained for making purchases using counterfeit credit card. Officers from Tanglin Police Division arrested the duo and recovered an assortment of counterfeit credit cards and items worth more than $30,000, believed to have been purchased using some of the counterfeit credit cards.
The two suspects will be charged in Court on 23 November 2016 with the offence of Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. Anyone found guilty of the offence may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
The Police would like to take this opportunity to remind merchants and sales staff to exercise vigilance particularly during the upcoming festive shopping season and always adopt correct card acceptance procedures when processing credit card transactions. They should look out for the various security features on the card face. If they are suspicious, they should contact their processing bank immediately for advice.
