The Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

 

On 13 November 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment at a HDB unit in Hougang. The suspect had smashed the unit’s window glass panel and thrown a ‘Molotov Cocktail’ into the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries and aid of images from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Ang Mo Kio Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him in the vicinity of Marsiling on 29 November 2016. During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a stun device, drug apparatus and controlled drugs. Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to have committed other criminal cases.

 

The suspect will be charged in court on 1 December 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.

 

Police have zero tolerance for such lawless acts of loanshark harassment. Those inclined to commit these acts of harassment causing damage and endangering lives of innocent victims will be pursued and dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
