The Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating by personation.

Between 16 March 2016 and 27 April 2016, the Police received several reports regarding victims who were purportedly cheated into giving loans to a man who claimed to be their colleague. The suspect would randomly call up various shops to solicit for the staff’s names and contact numbers under the guise of a customer. Thereafter he would then call up the victims, pretending to be one of their colleagues and request for financial assistance. The victims subsequently checked with their colleague and discovered that their colleague did not make any calls to them and also did not request for any fund transfers.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Division conducted extensive follow up investigations and arrested the suspect on 5 December 2016 along Jalan Ubi.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 7 December 2016 with the offence of Cheating by Personation under Section 419 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he may be punished with an imprisonment term which may extend to 5 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
