The Police have arrested another six men, aged between 17 and 24 years old for their suspected involvement in several cases of attempted cheating.
Between 13 March and 5 April 2017, the Police received several reports that different men had tried to sell gold bars which were believed to be fake. Through extensive follow up investigations, officers from Central Division managed to establish the identities of another six suspects. Two persons had earlier been arrested on 5 April 2017 in relation to the same case. Between 6 and 7 April 2017, simultaneous operations were carried out at Joo Koon Road, Kampong Java Road, Yishun and Outram Road, leading to the arrests of the six suspects. In the course of the operation, a total of 45 fake gold bars were recovered. Preliminary investigation revealed that the group had attempted to sell the fake gold bars at several pawnshops and to members of the public.
Three suspects aged 17, 19 and 24 years will be charged in Court on 8 April 2017 for one count of conspiracy to cheat under Section 420 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code. Investigations against the rest of the suspects are still ongoing. Anyone found guilty of an offence of Cheating may be punished with an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
The Police would like to remind members of the public to be cautious and not to buy gold bars from unreliable sources.
