The Police have arrested a woman and a man, aged 30 and 33, for their suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases.

On 16 May 2017, the Police received a report that credit card details which were believed to have been stolen were used to make online purchases. Through extensive enquiries, officers from Central Police Division and Commercial Affairs Department established the identities of the suspects and arrested them along Scotts Road on 30 May 2017.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to have used stolen credit cards to make unauthorized purchases online and from retail outlets. The suspects are believed to be involved in more than 90 cases amounting to about $45,000 since February 2017.

 The suspects will be charged in Court on 31 May 2017 with an offence of Abetment of cheating by conspiracy, which is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Members of the public are advised to adopt the following measures to minimise the likelihood of compromising personal credit card information and the fraudulent usage of such details:

  • During a transaction, keep an eye on your card. Make sure you get it back before you leave;
  • Save your receipts to compare with the bank statement;
  • Open your bills promptly, or check them online regularly, and tally them with the purchases you have made; and
  • Report any suspicious transactions to the card issuer immediately.
