Joint Enforcement Operations Against Errant Heavy Vehicle Drivers

On 19 June 2017, the Traffic Police (TP) conducted a joint operation with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and National Environment Agency (NEA) against errant heavy vehicle drivers.

During the operation, 62 summonses were issued against 30 heavy vehicle drivers for various traffic offences such as speeding, failing to keep left on expressways and using a mobile communication device while driving. 36 LTA offences such as illegal modification of vehicles were also detected. Additionally, 1 foreign heavy vehicle was turned back to Malaysia for excessive smoke emission.

The number of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles have increased by 20.6%, from 34 cases in 2015 to 41 cases in 2016. In 2016, 3 in 10 fatal accidents involved a heavy vehicle. This is worrying as accidents involving heavy vehicles could potentially cause greater damage and loss of lives. As heavy vehicle drivers spend many hours on the roads and are always on a tight schedule, it is even more important for them to obey all traffic rules and regulations. For errant heavy vehicle drivers who flout traffic rules, TP will continue to adopt a tough enforcement stance against them.

TP would also like to urge other road users to play their part by adopting good RoadSense and to look out for one another when sharing the roads.

Deputy Commander Traffic Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Devrajan Bala said: “Heavy vehicles because of their size have the propensity to cause greater damage and loss of lives when involved in an accident. TP urges all heavy vehicle drivers to be responsible and to think about the accident victims especially the vulnerable groups, the elderly & young pedestrians and motorcyclists. Through these ground operations, TP hopes to further shape the behaviour of the heavy vehicle drivers to safeguard other road users”.
