The Police have arrested a 38-year-old man for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

 

On 14 August 2017, Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Blk 209 Jurong East Street 21 was locked with bicycle lock and a debtor’s note was left at the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries and viewing of images from Police Cameras (PolCams) and other cameras in the area, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him at West Coast Road on 16 August 2017.  

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in the vicinity of Clementi, Jurong East, Jurong West, Henderson, Tampines, Pasir Ris, Bedok and Choa Chu Kang housing estates.

 

The suspect will be charged in Court on 18 August 2017 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
