The Police have arrested two men, aged 31 and 55, for their suspected involvement in separate cases of loansharking activities.
In the first case, on 21 November 2017, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment at Blk 201 Marsiling Drive. The front door of a residential unit was splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti were found scrawled on the walls along the staircases. Through extensive ground enquiries and the aid of footages from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Jurong Police Division arrested the 31-year-old suspect at Yishun Street 81 on the same day The suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment at Yishun, Woodlands, Sin Ming and Tampines housing estates. One mobile phone and a black marker pen were seized as case exhibits.
In the second case, on 21 November 2017, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment at Blk 366 Clementi Ave 2 where kerosene was splashed at a residential unit. With the aid of footages from Polcams, officers from Clementi Police Division arrested the 50-year-old suspect at City Plaza on 22 November 2017. He is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in Clementi, Woodlands, Yishun and Balam Road housing estates.
The two suspects will be charged in court separately on 23 November 2017 and 24 November 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
