The Police have arrested 3 men, aged between 37 and 52, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.

 

In the first case, on 16 January 2018, the Police received a report of loanshark harassment at the carpark near Blk 614 Yishun Street 61 whereby four vehicles were splashed with paint and debtors’ notes were placed on the vehicles. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of the suspects and arrested a 37-year-old man on 17 January 2018. Another 37-year-old man is assisting with Police investigations.  

 

In another separate case, on 17 January 2017, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at Blk 231 Ang Mo Kio Avenue where paint was splashed on the door and writings scrawled on the walls. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the two suspects, aged 37 and 52, and arrested the 52-year-old man on the same day. Investigations against the 37-year-old man are ongoing. The suspects are also believed to have carried out several other loanshark harassment cases in Serangoon, Edgefield Walk, Jalan Kayu and Yishun estates.

 

The two men who were arrested in the two cases will be charged in State Court on 18 January 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
