The Police have arrested a 22-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a loanshark harassment case.

On 25 February 2018, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Blk 423 Tampines St 41 was locked up with a padlock and had curry splashed on its main door and gate. Through extensive ground enquiries and follow up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him along Jalan Pisang on 1 March 2018. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in other loanshark harassment cases island-wide, including Tampines, Pasir Ris, Bedok Reservoir, Sengkang and Jurong housing estates. A mobile phone was also seized as a case exhibit.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 3 March 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
