The Police have arrested a 37-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases involving the pawning of fake gold chains.
Between 14 and 20 March 2018, the Police received two reports informing that an unknown man had pawned fake gold chains at two pawnshops. The suspect had visited both pawnshops and passed off the tampered gold chains as genuine ones in exchange for cash.
Officers from Tanglin Police Division conducted extensive follow-up investigations and established the identity of the suspect. He was arrested on 20 March 2018 and the two fake gold chains were seized as case exhibits. The suspect is also believed to be involved in several other cases island wide.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 22 March 2018 with the offence of Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. Any person found guilty of the offence of cheating may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
The police would like to advise pawnshop proprietors to be vigilant against such scams. They should check and verify the identities of individuals who pawn items at their premises as well as their guarantors before completing each transaction.
