The Police have arrested a 20-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of mobile phone contract scam.

The Police received multiple reports from victims between January and March 2018, informing that they have been cheated by a man who offered to provide them monetary returns in exchange for mobile phone subscriptions. Through extensive ground inquiries and follow-up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him on 22 March 2018 along Bedok North Street 2.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect persuaded the victims to sign up for mobile lines, coupled with handphones, in exchange for returns of $300 to $500. The suspect assured the victims that the mobile phone contract would be terminated subsequently with no charges to be incurred. However, after receiving the handphones from the victims, the suspect would sell them for a profit and become uncontactable thereafter. The suspect also did not terminate the phone lines, thus saddling the victims with phone bills.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 24 March 2018 with the offence of Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code Chapter 224 which is punishable with an imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 10 years, and shall be liable to a fine.
