The Police have arrested a 42-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of theft and forgery of cheques. A 33-year-old woman was also arrested for her suspected involvement in the abetment of the forgery offences.

On 22 January 2018, Police received a report from a victim informing that his cheques which were mailed to an intended recipient were stolen and had been encashed by unknown persons.

Officers from Tanglin Police Division conducted follow-up investigations and established the identity of the two suspects. On 29 March 2018, the man and woman were arrested along Kampong Java Road and North Bridge Road respectively. A total of four cheques were recovered as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations suggest that the man had stolen the cheques from mailboxes and doctored the cheques to reflect his name and the female suspect’s name before encashing them. The man is believed to be involved in other similar cases of theft and forgery.

The man will be charged in court with theft on 31 March 2018. Investigations against the woman are ongoing.

Any person found guilty of theft under section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 3 years, and shall also be liable to a fine. If convicted for forgery of a valuable security under section 467 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, he shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 15 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.  Anyone who intentionally aid in, or abet the commission of the said offence may also be liable to the same punishment.
