The Police have arrested a 41-year-old man for making a false bomb threat.

On 5 April 2018 at 2.27 pm, the Police were informed of an alleged bomb threat on-board flight TR634 which was bound for Hat Yai. The plane, which turned back under the escort of SAF fighter jets, landed safely in Changi Airport.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had claimed he had a bomb in his hand-carry baggage to a crew. The plane was turned back on the pilot’s request. All passengers and crews disembarked safely on arrival at Changi Airport. The Police conducted a thorough security search on board the plane as well as the baggage of the suspect and his two traveling companions and did not find any suspicious articles. The Police treat all security threats seriously and will not hesitate to take action against anyone who causes public alarm.

The man was arrested under Regulation 8(1) of the United Nations (Anti-Terrorism Measures) Regulations, which states that it is an offence for a person to communicate or make available by any means any information which he knows or believes to be false to another person, with the intention of inducing in him or any other person a false belief that a terrorist act has been, is being or will be carried out.  Any person found guilty of committing the offence shall be punished with a fine not exceeding $500,000 or with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years, or both.
