The Police have arrested a 38-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a jewellery theft case.

On 8 April 2018, the Police received a report that a man had fled from a pawnshop located at Bendemeer Road, after allegedly stealing jewellery valued at about $6300. The man had requested to try on a few pieces of jewellery, consisting of two rings, two pendants and one gold chain, on the pretext that he was interested to buy them. After putting on the jewellery, the man suddenly dashed out of the shop. The staff of the shop gave chase but eventually lost sight of him. Officers from Central Police Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and arrested the man on 9 April 2018.

The man will be charged in court on 11 April 2018 with theft in dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 which carries an imprisonment term of up to 7 years and shall also be liable to fine.

The Police would like to advise retailers to be vigilant against similar tactics and to keep a close watch on items placed on their display counters.
