Man To Be Charged For Acting As A Member Of An Unlawful Society And Criminal Intimidation

A 44-year-old man, who was a former Criminal Law Police Supervisee, will be charged in court on 18 April 2018, for acting as a member of an unlawful society under the Societies Act and criminal intimidation under the Penal Code.

On 6 August 2017, the Police were alerted to a case of criminal intimidation along Aliwal Street. Follow-up investigations revealed that the suspect was believed to have uttered threatening words and caused alarm to the victim, a former police officer who previously dealt with his case. The suspect was also believed to have flaunted his secret society affiliation to the former police officer. Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) subsequently arrested the suspect on 12 April 2018.

Under Section 14(3) of the Societies Act, Chapter 311, anyone found guilty of being or acting as a member of an unlawful society shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term of up to three years or to both. Under Section 506 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, anyone found guilty of committing criminal intimidation shall be liable to an imprisonment term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

The Police take a very stern view of gang-related activities, and will not hesitate to take action against those who choose to be associated with gangs or blatantly disregard the law
