The Police have arrested two men, aged 22 and 25, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loansharking activities.

In the first case, on 17 April 2018 at about 8.25pm, the Police received a report from an occupant of a residential unit at Blk 510 West Coast Drive, informing that a man had tried to lock his unit with a bicycle lock. The man was detained and was subsequently arrested by officers from Clementi Police Division. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 22-year-old man is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in Clementi, Bedok, Kaki Bukit and Punggol housing estates. The man will be charged in court on 19 April 2018 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition).

In the second case, on 17 April 2018 at about 7.05pm, the Police received a report from an occupant of a residential unit at Blk 640 Bedok Reservoir Road that an unknown a man had demanded for money from him. Officers from Bedok Police Division conducted follow up investigations and arrested the 25-year-old man along Jalan Tenaga within one and a half hours. A handphone was seized as case exhibit. Police investigations are ongoing.

Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
