The Police have arrested two men, aged 29 and 37, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loansharking harassment. 

In the first case, on 21 April 2018, the Police received a report that hell and debtor notes were found under the door of a residential unit at Blk 350 Clementi Avenue 2. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTV images, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him along Jurong West on 26 April 2018. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in Clementi, Yishun, Hougang, Paya Lebar, Yung Loh Road, Bukit Panjang and Lorong Limau housing estates.

In the second case, on 26 April 2018, the Police received a report that an unknown man had delivered a debtor note and a packet of coffee to a residential unit at Blk 9 Teck Whye Lane. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 27 April 2018 within 24 hours of the report lodged. Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to be involved in several other cases of loanshark harassment island-wide.

Both men will be charged in court on 28 April 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
