The Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
On 9 May 2018, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment whereby the gates of a residential unit at Blk 217 Jurong East Street 21 were found locked by a bicycle lock. Through extensive ground enquiries and the aid of images from police cameras officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him on 14 May 2018. A debtor note, markers and several bicycle lock keys found in his possession were seized as case exhibits.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in Jurong East, Jurong West, Bukit Batok, Woodlands and Toa Payoh housing estates.
The suspect will be charged in court on 16 May 2018 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
