Man Arrested for Suspected Involvement in Loanshark Harassment Activities

The Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a loanshark harassment case.

 

On 11 May 2018, the Police were alerted to a loanshark harassment case whereby paint was splashed at the front door and graffiti was found scrawled on the wall of a residential unit at Serangoon North Avenue 4. Officers from Ang Mo Kio and Jurong Police Divisions established the identity of the man through ground enquiries and footage from police cameras and arrested him on 17 May 2018 at Punggol Drive. The clothes which he wore during the commission of the alleged harassment and other loanshark-related paraphernalia such as paint were seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in more than 10 other cases of loanshark harassment islandwide.

 

The man will be charged in court on 19 May 2018 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
