The Police have arrested a 21-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of fraudulent credit card purchases online.  
 
On 12 March 2018, the Police received a report from a local airline company discovered several fraudulent credit transactions and received chargeback requests from banks relating to online flight bookings made via different credit cards.
 
Following investigations, officers from Tanglin Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 3 June 2018 along Whampoa Road. A computer, several other electronic devices and credit cards were also seized.   
  
The man will be charged in court on 4 June 2018 with unauthorised access to computer material under Section 3(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act, Chapter 50A. If convicted, the man  faces a fine not exceeding $5000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or to both.

The Police would like to advise all credit / debit card holders to adopt the following measures to prevent unauthorised use of their cards:  
 
    a. Opt for SMS OTP verification for purchases or charges to your credit / debit cards;
 
    b. Opt for an SMS to be sent to your handphone for any charges incurred on your credit / debit card;
 
    c. Always log out, clear the browsing history and cache memory of a public computer terminal after use;
 
    d. Check bank statements and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or fraudulent charges; and,
 
    e. Do not give out your credit / debit card details to strangers.
