The Police have arrested two women and a man, aged between 18 and 25, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassments.
In the first case, on 27 June 2018, the Police received a report that loanshark-related graffiti was scribbled on the walls and paint was also splashed on the door of a residential unit at Blk 19 Dover Crescent. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras and CCTVs, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the 18-year-old man and arrested him along Senja Road on 16 July 2018. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in other loanshark harassment cases in Dover and Tanglin Halt.
In the second case, on 16 July 2018, the Police received a report that two women were trying to use a bicycle lock to lock the gate of a residential unit along Circuit Road. The women, aged 24 and 25, were subsequently arrested by officers from Bedok Police Division. Preliminary investigations revealed that both women are believed to be involved in other cases of loanshark harassment in Tampines and Hougang housing estates. Three bicycle locks were seized. Police investigations are ongoing.
The man will be charged in court on 18 July 2018 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
