The Police have arrested a 19-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment involving fire along Jurong West Street 42.
On 8 August 2018 at about 5.17pm, the Police were alerted to a case of fire at a residential unit at Block 401 Jurong West Street 42. The door of the unit was set on fire. Through ground enquiries, officers from Jurong Police Division located the suspect swiftly and arrested him. A 51-year-old male resident, who stays above the affected unit, suffered burns on both his hands when he tried to put out the fire before running down the staircase to escape the fire, and he has been conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. Police investigations are ongoing.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 10 August 2018 for unlicensed moneylending harassment by setting fire, causing hurt and damage. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), anyone found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than six and not more than 12 strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities involving fire. Those who commit such acts of harassment, causing damage and endangering lives of innocent victims will be arrested and dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist the loansharks in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in illegal loansharking activities.
