The Police have arrested a 53-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

On 7 August 2018 at 4.02 pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Clementi West Street 1. A debtor note was found to be left at the gate.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTV images, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the man in the video and arrested him along New Bridge Road. Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to be involved in other loanshark harassment cases islandwide. Police investigations are ongoing.

Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes. First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the business of unlicensed moneylending may be fined not less than $30,000 and not more $300,000, be imprisoned for a term not exceeding four years and shall also be liable to be punished with caning not more than 6 strokes.
